Describing India as an “extraordinary success story,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Wednesday that the significant accomplishments of the Modi government have tangibly benefited and positively impacted the lives of numerous Indians.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024, he also highlighted that the US-India relations have reached a new pinnacle due to concerted efforts from both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden.
Simultaneously, Blinken noted that an integral aspect of the ongoing discussions between the two nations revolves around the topics of republicanism and rights. He emphasized, “It’s part of a genuinely sustained and meaningful dialogue, a conversation we hope yields positive change, and such is the case with India.”
Responding to a query about whether the rise of Hindu nationalism in India raises concerns for the US despite the country’s robust economic growth and structural development under the Modi administration, Blinken explained, “We view India as an extraordinary success story, acknowledging the remarkable achievements Prime Minister Modi has overseen, which have significantly improved the lives of many Indians.” He added, “Our bilateral relationship has also attained a new level, a deliberate effort on the part of both Prime Minister Modi and President Biden.”
The US Secretary of State further emphasized the consistent inclusion of discussions on republicanism and rights in their interactions. “When the President assumed office, we aimed to reintegrate these fundamental principles of republicanism and human rights into our foreign policy, and we have done so. The approach varies depending on the relationship we maintain with a particular country or government,” he concluded.
