China expelled US warship from the South China Sea

As per the statement issued by The People’s Liberation Army’s southern theatre command, China deployed warships and aircraft to warn and drive away USS John S McCain from near the Paracel Island (Xisha Island) in the South China Sea.

According to China’s statement they expelled a US guided missile destroyer from the South China Sea just a day after it passed through the Taiwan Strait.

In reply US Navy said it was carrying out a lawful, “freedom of navigation operation”.

This happened for the first time since Joe Biden took over as President in January when the war of words happened between US and China because of the passage of the US warship through the South China Sea.

Tensions increased between the US and China during 4 years period of Donald Trump’s presidency over several issues including Taiwan and the South China Sea.

China claims almost all of South China Sea and this claim of China is disputed by several China’s maritime neighbors including Vietnam and Taiwan (which China claims to be its breakaway region). The other countries disputing China’s claim are The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.
