Brussels: European Union antitrust regulators initiated their inaugural investigations under the Digital Markets Act on Monday, targeting Apple, Alphabet’s Google, and Meta Platforms for potential violations of the groundbreaking EU tech regulations.
According to a statement from the EU executive, “The Commission suspects that the measures implemented by these major players may not fully comply with their obligations under the DMA.”
The EU competition watchdog will scrutinize Alphabet’s policies regarding steering on Google Play and self-preferencing on Google Search, Apple’s policies regarding steering in the App Store and the choice screen for Safari, as well as Meta’s ‘pay or consent model’. Additionally, the Commission has begun investigatory procedures concerning Apple’s new fee structure for alternative app stores and Amazon’s ranking practices on its marketplace.
