The controversial Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021, was passed by Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament. This is seen as a major setback for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which is Delhi’s ruling party.
This Bill gives more constitutional powers to the Central government’s appointed Lt. Governor as against the Delhi Assembly. This bill was already passed by the lower house (Lok Sabha) on Monday.
Moments after the controversial bill passed by parliament, Delhi’s government including CM Arvind Kejriwal, took to the social media and spoke against this move and accused the Central Government led by BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) was attempting to rule the national capital through the backdoor.
The new bill led to heated arguments in the upper House of Parliament a number of times. Members of The AAP, The Congress, and the Trinamool Congress as well as many other opposition leaders, raised slogans against the bill.
