Big-hitter Rinku Singh’s absence from the main India squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas left former all-rounder Irfan Pathan and ex-Australia skipper Aaron Finch surprised. However, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar attributed it to Singh’s poor form in the ongoing IPL. The BCCI’s announcement of a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June kept Singh, along with Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan, in the reserves.
Pathan was among the vocal former players expressing his opinion, stating that “Rinku’s recent past performance for Team India shouldn’t have been ignored.” Finch also expressed surprise at the selection of four spinners over Singh.
West Indian great Ian Bishop expressed his surprise at Singh’s exclusion, emphasizing his impressive T20I average, suggesting he deserved a place in the squad.
However, Gavaskar pointed out Singh’s lackluster form in the IPL as a possible reason for his omission. He mentioned that Singh hadn’t had many opportunities and speculated that this might have influenced the selectors’ decision.
Gavaskar also expressed his preference for left-handed pacer T Natarajan in the squad, highlighting his exceptional bowling performance.
While acknowledging the Indian team’s strength and experience, Gavaskar believed that the inclusion of all-rounder Hardik Pandya would compensate for the lack of a fourth specialist fast bowler.
India’s squad includes four spinners, with Gavaskar suggesting that the conditions in the West Indies might favor spinners more than fast bowlers.
Regarding Shubman Gill’s exclusion from the main squad, Gavaskar attributed it to the team’s depth and Gill’s inconsistent IPL performance.
Overall, Gavaskar emphasized the changes in attitude and approach within the Indian team, which could contribute to their success in the T20 World Cup, contrasting with their previous performances in the tournament.
