Kolkata: The parents of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have informed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that they suspect the involvement of several interns and physicians from the hospital in the crime, according to a CBI officer on Friday. The parents provided the CBI with names of individuals they believe were involved in their daughter’s tragic death. The CBI is currently investigating the case under an order from the Calcutta High Court.
“The parents suspect that multiple individuals were involved in the sexual assault and murder of their daughter. They have given us the names of a few interns and doctors who worked with her at the hospital,” a CBI officer told PTI. The CBI has summoned a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who were on duty with the victim the night she was attacked. Additionally, the former hospital principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was taken in for questioning by the CBI. Dr. Ghosh had resigned two days after the victim’s body was discovered, citing fears for his safety. He has since sought protection from the Calcutta High Court, which directed him to approach a single Bench for further action.
The CBI also conducted a crime scene reconstruction using advanced 3D technology in the hospital’s seminar hall, where the body of the post-graduate trainee was found on August 9. A civic volunteer, who has been arrested in connection with the case, was made to walk through the reconstruction.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the opposition parties CPI(M) and BJP of orchestrating vandalism at RG Kar Hospital and spreading misinformation regarding the case. “We want the truth to come out, but certain groups are spreading lies to mislead the public. Efforts are being made to distort the truth through fake news on social media. We strongly condemn these activities. The culprits must be punished,” she said during a rally.
In response, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia criticized leaders of the Opposition bloc INDIA, calling them “political vultures” who only address crimes against women when it suits their political agenda. Bhatia specifically named Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Manish Sisodia, Uddhav Thackeray, and other INDIA bloc leaders, accusing them of prioritizing vote bank politics over justice. He asserted that the silence of these leaders would be costly for the INDIA bloc and vowed that the CBI would ensure that all those responsible for the crime would face the harshest punishment, regardless of any political connections.
Protests have erupted nationwide, with medical students and doctors demanding stronger laws to ensure the safety of medical professionals in hospitals and workplaces.
