Air Canada passenger tries to open aircraft door on London-Toronto flight

A passenger on an Air Canada flight from London, England, to Toronto allegedly attempted to open the aircraft doors midflight on Sunday, as reported by the airline and police.

According to a statement from Air Canada, an incident occurred involving a “disruptive passenger” on the flight bound for Toronto from London’s Heathrow airport. Air Canada stated that their crews effectively managed the situation with the passenger, allowing the flight to continue normally to Toronto Pearson Airport.

The flight successfully landed in Toronto just after 3 p.m. on Sunday. Upon landing, Peel Regional Police, as reported by Global News, entered the aircraft and assessed the passenger—an elderly man—indicating that he “had been in a state of extremity and confusion.” Police clarified that it does not seem that his actions were intentional.

Additionally, authorities mentioned that Air Canada staff had restrained the passenger during the flight, adhering to their established flight and safety protocols. No criminal charges were filed, as confirmed by the police.

Air Canada also emphasized that it is not possible to open aircraft doors at high altitudes, as the doors are designed to function as a plug, utilizing differences in internal and external air pressure to create a secure seal.
