15 dead in Bangladesh Rohingya refugee campfire

At least 15 people died, 400 people missing and many injured in a massive blaze that ravaged parts of sprawling Rohingya refugee camps in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh.

The firefighters extinguished the fire overnight and found the charred bodies of 3 men, 2 women, and 2 children in the debris.

Many people got injured and re-treated at various health facilities run by aid agencies; the government is assessing the damage.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

On Monday evening the fire broke in one of the camps and spread through four adjoining ones, leaving thousands of Rohingya Muslims homeless.

It has been estimated that over 9,500 shanties have been destroyed.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, the fire has affected shelters, health centres, distribution points, and other facilities.

34 squalid camps built on more than 3,000 hectares of hilly land in Cox’s Bazar is home to more than 1 million Rohingya Muslims who fled due to persecution in Myanmar.

About 750,000 Rohingya refugees crossed the borders to Bangladesh after Myanmar launched a military crackdown on the Rohingya Muslims group in 2017.

Aid workers working hard to reunite Rohingya Muslim families separated after they were separated due to huge fires in the camps. Many children separated from their parents due to this fire.

This fire forced about 45,000 people out of their homes made of bamboo and plastic.
