The United States has urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and seek resolution through dialogue amidst escalating tensions, stated US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Tuesday. When questioned about recent statements by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh regarding India’s stance on dealing with terrorists, Miller emphasized the US’s neutrality, stating, “The United States is not going to intervene in this matter. However, we do encourage both India and Pakistan to refrain from escalation and seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue.”
Miller also addressed queries regarding potential sanctions against India over the alleged assassination plot of Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. He declined to discuss any potential sanctions, reiterating the US’s policy of not openly disclosing such actions.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, designated as a terrorist by India, has been the subject of threats against India. According to the US Justice Department, Indian national Nikhil Gupta, currently in custody, has been charged with the murder-for-hire of Pannun. Allegations suggest that an Indian government employee recruited Gupta to arrange Pannun’s assassination, which was intercepted by US authorities. India has initiated an inquiry into these allegations.
Prime Minister Modi, during a recent public rally, underscored his government’s firm stance against terrorism, asserting that terrorists are being dealt with decisively. He highlighted significant policy decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, made under his government’s tenure.
India has consistently emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards cross-border terrorism and reiterated that improving ties with Islamabad hinges on Pakistan’s actions to curb terrorism. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed similar sentiments, stating that Pakistan must take decisive action against cross-border terrorism to foster a conducive atmosphere for bilateral relations.
Singh emphasized that India stands ready to assist Pakistan in combating terrorism if the latter demonstrates a genuine intent to end it. He reiterated India’s commitment to thwarting terrorist activities within its borders and hinted at potential measures to address terrorism across the border if necessary.
