Scotiabank has resolved an issue that left some customers unable to access their online banking services on Friday, marking the second consecutive end-of-month payday disruption for the bank.
For hours, Scotiabank’s social media team responded to numerous frustrated customers who reported being unable to log into the Scotiabank app or website on both desktop and mobile devices.
A Scotiabank spokesperson told Global News earlier on Friday that “some customers may be experiencing intermittent login issues when accessing their online accounts,” but emphasized that there was “no impact to direct deposit or other services.” The spokesperson added, “Our teams are working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.”
Shortly before 4 p.m., the spokesperson confirmed that the issue had been resolved, though the cause of the problem remained unclear.
According to Downdetector, reports of issues with Scotiabank began to surge just before 11 a.m. Eastern Time, with nearly 1,600 complaints logged at one point. The number of reports gradually declined throughout the day.
Several customers who contacted Scotiabank on X (formerly Twitter) noted that this was not the first time they had encountered problems accessing their paychecks online. Last month, a “technical issue” prevented some customers’ payments, including direct deposits, from being deposited, though withdrawals were still possible. That issue persisted for hours before being resolved in the afternoon.
Scotiabank assured customers that any fees incurred due to what it described as an “error” would be refunded, although the cause of that incident was also not fully explained.
