A man died in Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state on Tuesday, after a suspected shark attack at a beach.
According to NSW police, emergency services were called to Tuncurry Beach which is about 300 km north of Sydney at about 11.20 am as a man was attacked while surfing and had critical injuries to his upper right thigh.
Officers from Manning Great Lakes Police District commenced CPR, pulled out a man believed to be in his 50s from the water but he died at the scene, police said.
The Police closed both Tuncurry Beach and Forster Main Beach.
Police said they would work with the Department of Primary Industries to identify the species responsible for the attack.
“Despite the best efforts of paramedics and bystanders at the scene the man could not be resuscitated,” NSW Ambulance said tweeted about an hour after saying that paramedics were responding to reports of a shark attack at the beach.
Fatal shark attacks have increased in Australia in 2020 making the year 2020 the deadliest year on record since 1934.
Australia reported 8 deadly shark attacks last year.
For about 50 years in Australia, there has been on average 1 fatal shark attack every year but there was none in 2019.
