Israel officials support Gaza destruction, court hears

Israel’s alleged plan to “destroy” Gaza, as presented at the UN’s top court by South African attorneys, accuses Israel of genocide. South Africa has urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to order Israel to cease military operations in Gaza. Israel, set to present its defense on Friday, vehemently denies the allegations. The ICJ will provide an opinion on the genocide claim, but it is not enforceable. South Africa argues that Israel’s actions are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian population. The court is closely watched, and tensions between Palestinian and Israeli sympathizers were evident outside the ICJ. Israel’s delegation is expected to emphasize its right to self-defense under international law. The final ruling on the genocide allegation could take time. South Africa has been critical of Israel’s military operation in Gaza, drawing parallels with its struggle against apartheid. Over 23,350 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.
