Canada aligns post-graduate work permit visa to manage labor shortages

Canada: Canada is adjusting its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program to address labor shortages by restricting benefits to students whose studies align with sectors experiencing a lack of workers.

Beginning on September 1, international students attending private colleges in Canada will no longer receive automatic eligibility for PGWP benefits. The proposed changes are anticipated to particularly affect Indian students, who comprise the largest cohort of international students in Canada.

Currently, Indians represent approximately 40% of the 800,000 international students in Canada, according to government data. Many Indian students choose Canada due to its perceived ease of transitioning to permanent residency and citizenship.
