Bangladesh ferry capsizes death toll reaches 34

The death toll from a ferry capsize on Sunday in Bangladesh has increased to 34 after some more bodies found in the Shitalakkhya river in the Narayanganj district.

The ferry named ML Sabit Al Hasan was overcrowded as it was carrying about 50 people capsized after colliding with a cargo ship (SKL-3) at about 6 pm on Sunday.

About 20 people were able to swim to safety after the boat capsized.

8 more bodies were found adrift on the waters after the salvage operation was officially called off on Monday.

21 bodies were found trapped inside the double-decker ferry when after the ferry was towed to the shore after an 18-hour salvage operation that was conducted by a team consisting of police, fire service, navy, coast guard, and staff of the civil defense department. 5 more bodies were found adrift an hour later.

According to Commodore Golam Sadeq who is the head of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, the coast guards would continue their search for now in case others were found.

This accident will be investigated by two separate bodies formed by the Bangladesh Inland and Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner.
