Bandaged Trump makes RNC appearance two days after shooting

Two days after surviving an attempted assassination, former President Donald Trump made a triumphant appearance at the Republican National Convention’s opening night with a bandage over his right ear, adding another dramatic chapter to his presidential campaign.

The GOP delegates erupted in cheers when Trump appeared on screen backstage and then walked into the arena, visibly emotional, as Lee Greenwood performed “God Bless the USA.” This appearance came hours after the convention had formally nominated Trump to lead the Republican ticket in the upcoming November election against President Joe Biden.

The convention continued on Tuesday, focusing on immigration, a key issue in Trump’s political platform that has resonated with the GOP base since his initial campaign in 2015. Surrounded by a wall of Secret Service agents on Monday, Trump did not speak but waved and smiled as Greenwood sang. He later joined his newly announced running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, to listen to the evening’s speeches, displaying a subdued demeanor uncharacteristic of his usual flamboyance.

The enthusiastic reception highlighted the crowd’s deep affection for Trump, who initially won the 2016 nomination as an outsider clashing with the party establishment but has since solidified his control over the Republican Party. Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley, Trump’s chosen leader, emphasized unity within the party and the nation, urging the same strength and resilience as shown by Trump to lead the country to a brighter future.

However, the call for unity did not extend to Biden and the Democrats. Republican leaders, including Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, criticized Democratic policies as dangerous to America’s institutions, values, and people. Johnson, speaking from the battleground state of Wisconsin, which Trump won in 2016 but lost in 2020, highlighted the stakes of the upcoming election.

The Trump campaign aimed to present a softer and more optimistic message during the convention, focusing on themes to broaden Trump’s appeal among moderate voters and people of color. Monday night, dedicated to the economy, featured speakers introduced as “everyday Americans” — including a single mother discussing inflation, a lifelong Democrat union member now supporting Trump, and a small business owner.

Prominent Black Republicans also took the stage, emphasizing Trump’s efforts to garner more support from a traditionally Democratic demographic. U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Texas addressed rising grocery and energy prices, asserting that electing Trump could resolve these issues and return him to the White House.
