NASA has ruled out the possibility of asteroid Apophis hitting the earth in 2068. According to NASA out planet is safe from the notorious Asteroid for at least a century.
According to NASA as they got results from a new radar observation campaign combined with precise orbit analysis of the asteroid have helped them conclude that there is no risk of Asteroid ‘Apophis’ impacting Earth for at least the next 100 years.
Apophis was discovered in 2004 is estimated to be about 340 meters across. The astronomers predicted that it could be uncomfortably close to Earth in 2029. But it was later ruled out due to additional observations of the near-Earth object (NEO) and was said to come close to Earth in 2036. Until this month it was said a small chance of impact in 2068 still remained.
Apophis made a distant flyby of Earth around 5th March when astronomers use powerful radar observations to refine the estimate of its orbit around the Sun with extreme precision, these observations helped them rule out any impact risk in 2068 and a long time after.
According to the statement of Davide Farnocchia of NASA’s Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), “With the support of recent optical observations and additional radar observations, the uncertainty in Apophis’ orbit has collapsed from hundreds of kilometers to just a handful of kilometers when projected to 2029. This greatly improved knowledge of its position in 2029 provides more certainty of its future motion, so we can now remove Apophis from the risk list.”
Apophis is still nearly 17 million kilometers away from Earth.
