In a tragic turn of events, one of the arms suppliers implicated in the recent shooting incident outside actor Salman Khan’s residence has reportedly died by suicide while in police custody. Anuj Thapan, aged 32, who was apprehended from Punjab on April 26, was discovered in the act in a toilet attached to the police lock-up at 11 am.
Thapan, who was among 10 other detainees in the lock-up, was under the watch of four to five policemen. He and another suspect, Sonu Subhash Chander, were allegedly involved in providing the weapons used in the shooting incident outside the Mumbai home of the renowned actor on April 14.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances leading to Thapan’s suicide. Former senior police officer PK Jain emphasized that any death in police custody is treated as a potential murder case. He stated that the CID would interrogate all personnel stationed at the police station.
Jain further explained the standard procedures regarding the safety of detainees, highlighting the necessity for regular inspections of lock-ups to prevent any self-harm attempts. He cited instances where individuals have used makeshift nooses from clothing to commit suicide within lock-up facilities.
Additionally, Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal, who are suspected of being directly or indirectly associated with the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, are also in police custody. Bishnoi, along with his brother Anmol Bishnoi, has been declared as the prime suspects in the case by the Mumbai Crime Branch, following the discovery of compelling evidence against them.
Salman Khan has been under heightened security since November 2022 due to threats from Lawrence Bishnoi and another gangster, Goldy Brar. With his security level elevated to Y-Plus, the actor is permitted to carry a personal firearm and travels in an armored vehicle as precautionary measures.
