On Thursday, Heartland Fertility, established in 1997 and previously located on Portage Avenue, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate its new state-of-the-art facility on Nature Park Way, just off Kenaston Boulevard.
This facility, the only one of its kind in Manitoba, offers various fertility treatments to assist same-sex couples and individuals experiencing infertility in starting a family. It guides them through the emotional and often stressful journey to parenthood.
Anna and Rezan Almojuela are intimately familiar with this journey, as their path to parenthood has been arduous. The Winnipeg couple began fertility treatments at Heartland in 2019 and encountered challenges such as ectopic pregnancies, surgeries, and various fertility treatments including intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Anna expressed, “It’s been a lot over a very short amount of time, but we got through it.” She emphasized the invaluable support received from Heartland, stating, “From the staff to the nurses to the doctors, we never felt a lack of empathy. And just the patience — because you go through frustration, you go through sadness, you go through losing hope, and it’s just like the staff are willing to be patient and just be there for you.”
Their perseverance paid off when a second cycle of IVF at Heartland in 2022 resulted in the birth of their daughter Elyanna in April 2023.
