Newfoundland Liberal MP Ken McDonald has clarified that he is not currently advocating for a leadership review of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, retracting his previous statement made in response to a journalist’s question. In a released statement, McDonald explained that his recent public commentary was not intended to call for a leadership review, and he continues to support Trudeau and his Liberal colleagues.
“I was tagged as a Liberal MP in 2015 and have proudly served on the Liberal side for eight terms. My intention was not to call for a leadership review, and I am not doing so now,” McDonald stated. “I believe that the Prime Minister is a skilled politician with the best interests of Canadians at heart. I will maintain my support for my fellow party members and the Prime Minister, as I have done since 2015.”
McDonald, responding to a journalist’s question in a recorded interview, had initially expressed support for a leadership review within the Liberal Party. However, in his official statement, he clarified his position and emphasized his ongoing support for Trudeau.
The statement concludes by noting that McDonald will not provide further comments on the issue.
Before the Atlantic Liberal side meeting in Ottawa on Thursday, Housing Minister Sean Fraser addressed McDonald’s comments, stating that individuals are free to express their opinions. Fraser suggested that McDonald may have felt that his previous remarks did not accurately represent his personal standpoint.
Fraser defended the government’s record and Trudeau’s leadership, stating that people are focused on real concerns such as the cost of living. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the population due to changes in the economy.
A News article quoted McDonald as describing the government as an “old government” and suggesting that every party and leader has a “best-before date,” with theirs potentially approaching.
