Trudeau says antisemitism rise is ‘terrifying’ after teen terror charges

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern about the rise of antisemitism in Canada after a 15-year-old was arrested in Ottawa and charged with terrorism-related offenses. The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is suspected of intending to target the Jewish community and possessing explosive materials. Trudeau emphasized the government’s commitment to keeping all communities safe, particularly in the face of rising antisemitism linked to events overseas. He stated that the arrest demonstrated their dedication to ensuring the safety of the Jewish community and all communities in the country.

Many Jewish Canadians have expressed feeling compromised safety, with cases of protesters targeting Jewish-owned businesses, such as bookmaker Indigo, and shopping centers during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Trudeau affirmed the freedom to protest but drew a line when it involves targeting individual Canadians, especially based on their identity. He addressed a video showing a heated exchange between pro-Palestinian protesters and Toronto police officers, emphasizing that actions making others feel unsafe in the country are not part of free protesting, freedom of speech, or legal expression.

When asked about the police’s role, Trudeau stated that the police need to ensure the arrest of people engaged in acts of violence and breaking the law, as these issues need to be taken seriously to prevent escalation.

Trudeau is facing significant pressure both domestically and internationally, with polls suggesting a substantial number of Canadians believe it’s time for him to step down as Liberal leader and prime minister. Despite the calls for resignation, Trudeau expressed his intention to lead the Liberals in the upcoming election, scheduled for fall 2025, under the confidence and supply agreement with the NDP.
