Many funerals were held across Myanmar on Sunday after Saturday’s violence and many deaths after the clashes between the military junta and the protesters. The violence rose to its highest-ever level on Saturday that left 114 unarmed civilians dead including children.
The funeral processions were held in many cities across Myanmar including Yangon, Monywa, Meiktila, and Mandalay.
According to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) monitoring group, the total death toll from 1st February till now rose to 423.
The military seized control of Myanmar after an election in which former de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s ruling National League for Democracy party won a landslide victory.
The protest against the military take over continued also on Sunday.
As said by a resident of Hlaing Township, soldiers threw grenades at protesters; however, no immediate deaths have been reported.
The Myanmar military has been slammed by Defence chiefs from twelve countries. A joint statement was given by Defence chiefs of The US, UK, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea.
They urged Myanmar’s military to cease violence and work to “restore respect and credibility with the people of Myanmar that it has lost through its actions.”
A professional military follows international standards for conduct and is responsible for protecting – not harming – the people it serves.”
Myanmar’s military turned deaf ear to the increasingly deadly and non-stop protests against its seizure of power in February and went ahead and celebrated Armed Forces Day with parades and speeches on Saturday.
