A 3-day ceasefire started on Thursday in Afghanistan as people celebrate the end of the holy month, Ramadan, for Muslims and celebrate the festival of Eid-al-Fitr.
Taliban militant group announced a 3-day nationwide ceasefire last week.
Reacting to the Taliban’s offer, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also ordered government security forces to respect the ceasefire.
The Afghan government also asked the Taliban for a permanent ceasefire.
The people from the embattled northern Kunduz province and the embattled south-eastern province of Ghazni can celebrate Eid peacefully. These provinces have seen heavy fighting in recent days between the government forces and the Taliban.
The Taliban have intensified attacks on provincial capitals, districts, bases, and checkpoints after the process of withdrawal of international troops began on 1st May.
The Afghan forces have tried to repel these attacks, but 2 districts have already fallen to the Islamists.
According to observers these attacks by the Taliban is just the beginning of annual offense and could increase after the withdrawal of US and NATO troops is complete.
As per the official figures about 10,000 US and NATO soldiers were still in Afghanistan at the beginning of May. All are set to withdraw by 11th September.
According to the US military on Tuesday, it estimates around 6% to 12% of the entire withdrawal process had been completed.
