Canada’s Lynx Air to shut down, leaving no clarity for customers on refunds

Lynx Air, a Canadian discount airline, will cease operations on Monday and may also cancel numerous flights over the weekend, leaving passengers scrambling to rearrange their travel plans. The airline made this announcement late Thursday, advising affected customers to contact their credit card companies for refunds on canceled flights, as Lynx itself cannot facilitate refunds. Canada’s Transport Minister, Pablo Rodriguez, stated that he was aware of Lynx’s intention to file for restructuring and expected the airline to assist passengers in returning home and provide full refunds.

The shutdown is scheduled to commence early Monday, although the airline mentioned on its website that it plans to continue operating the majority of its flights throughout the weekend. Lynx cited various challenges, including inflation, fuel costs, competition, and other factors, as insurmountable obstacles despite its significant efforts to expand since rebranding two years ago.

Previously known as Enerjet, Lynx made its inaugural flight in April 2022, targeting leisure travelers and competing against Air Canada (including its Rouge subsidiary), WestJet, and Flair Airlines. Just a week before the announcement of its shutdown, Lynx had announced plans to expand its network by adding flights between Toronto and Cancun, Mexico.
