Trudeau calls Bell layoffs a ‘garbage decision’: ‘I’m pretty pissed off’

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented on Bell’s recent announcement of layoffs, characterizing it as a “regrettable decision” made by a company expected to act more responsibly. Speaking at a healthcare press event in the Greater Toronto Area, Trudeau expressed disappointment, stating that Canadians deserve better from corporate leaders like Bell, whose actions undermine trust and cohesion within the nation.

He emphasized the significance of robust journalism, especially in combating misinformation and upholding democracy. Trudeau criticized Bell’s move as not just detrimental to journalism but also to Canadians’ ability to connect and engage with their communities.

Bell’s recent round of layoffs saw approximately 4,800 employees being let go, along with the sale of 45 local radio stations, predominantly in British Columbia. Additionally, the company ceased 24 local newscasts, reducing weekly local news coverage by 90 hours across its CTV stations, excluding Toronto.

Bell executives attributed these actions to the government’s delay in providing relief for media companies facing declining advertising revenue, as well as the slow response of regulatory bodies like the CRTC to address the crisis. They pointed to legislative measures such as Bill C-18 and Bill C-11, designed to support the struggling media sector by compelling tech giants to compensate Canadian news outlets and contribute to Canadian content, respectively.

Regarding government support for media companies like Bell, Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge stated that companies should fulfill their obligations and noted that Bell continues to generate significant revenue, implying their capacity to maintain news reporting despite economic challenges.

St-Onge mentioned that Bell has been receiving $40 million in annual support but will not receive additional public funds. She highlighted the broader struggles faced by media companies in Canada due to declining advertising revenue and the introduction of various government programs aimed at bolstering their finances.

Trudeau clarified that the government’s intention is not to “buy off journalists” but to support journalism as a vital pillar of democracy and ensure its continued viability.
