Human infection of H10N3 avian influenza reported in China

Human infection with the H10N3 strain of avian influenza has been found in Jiangsu province in China as said by the National Health Commission (NHC) on Tuesday.

A 41-year-old man in Zhenjiang city developed fever and other symptoms on 23rd April and was hospitalized on 28th April.

The man is now in stable condition and has broadly met the standards for discharge as per the note by the Commission.

Everyone who came into close contact with the man in Jiangsu has been placed under medical observation and emergency monitoring has been initiated but nothing abnormal has been detected.

The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention carried out whole-genome sequencing of the specimen on 28th May and the result was positive for the H10N3 virus.

According to the expert, the whole-genome analysis shows that the avian-origin virus is not effectively infectious to humans, and it poses a “very low” risk of large-scale outbreak.
