The US envoy says Islamic State (IS) remains a threat

A US envoy warned that the Islamic State (IS) terror group still remains a major security threat in Syria, Iraq, and other areas including Europe and North America.

John Godfrey, the acting special envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, said since the defeat of the Islamic State’s ‘fraudulent territorial caliphate’ in 2019, the terror group has increased its focus on the activities of its networks and branches.

The IS demonstrated this with an attack in Mozambique during the weekend in which at least 55 soldiers were killed.

According to Godfrey, “Attacks such as these are clearly an indicator that IS continues to actively seek to spread its malign activity to new fronts.

“Ensuring the enduring global defeat of IS will entail effectively countering IS branches and networks outside of Iraq and Syria, and we as a coalition recognize that”.
