Hundreds of thousands of Insignia air fryer products have been recalled in both Canada and the U.S. due to concerns regarding overheating, potential handle melting or breakage, and the risk of fire or burns.
The recall affects various models of Insignia digital air fryers, analog air fryers, and digital air fryer ovens, with cooking capacities ranging from 3.4 to 10 quarts. These products feature plastic or a combination of plastic and stainless steel bodies, with the brand name “INSIGNIA” located on the top or front of each unit. Additionally, a rating label on the underside of the product provides brand, model number, and other relevant information.
Health Canada, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Best Buy Canada are jointly coordinating this recall effort. Health Canada’s recall, issued on March 14, 2024, includes a list of impacted Insignia air fryer and air fryer oven models. According to Health Canada, aside from the risks of overheating and handle breakage, the air fryer ovens may also experience overheating, leading to potential glass door breakage and posing fire, burn, or laceration hazards.
As of February 20, 2024, Insignia has received reports of six incidents in Canada involving melted or broken handles on air fryers, along with one instance of glass breakage on an air fryer oven. No injuries have been reported so far in Canada. Similar issues have been reported in the U.S., with 24 incidents of overheating, melting, or glass shattering, including six cases of air fryers catching fire. However, there have been no reported injuries or property damage in the U.S. related to these incidents.
The affected products were sold between September 2021 and November 2023, with 99,903 units sold in Canada and an additional 183,443 units sold in the U.S. Customers in Canada who own one of the affected products are advised to immediately stop using them, unplug them, and visit a specified website to initiate the recall process. They should provide photographic evidence of the recalled unit, including the unplugged power cord, along with the model number and purchase receipt. Alternatively, customers can contact Best Buy Canada to register their recalled product. Best Buy Canada is offering gift cards equal to the full purchase price for customers with a receipt, or a $75 gift card for those without.
Any individuals who experience health or safety incidents related to the use of the product are encouraged to fill out a consumer product incident report form.
