Toronto –Beginning in November,Ontario students, parents, teachers and education partners,have an opportunity for the first time in 20 years to help transform the way student success is assessed and reported. While we have one of the best education systems in the world, we must continue to pursue excellence and adapt to a rapidly changing world.
That’s why the Ministry of Education’scommitment to refreshOntario’scurriculum will better capture a broader and more diverse student experience.Asix month independent review of assessment and reporting will be conducted,led by Dr. Carol Campbell and the Premier’s six Education Advisors. A series of online and public consultations will guidethe modernization of student assessment and reporting tools and strategies.
“These engagements will give voice to many students, parents and experts across the province,” says Dr. Campbell.“We hope to stimulate constructive discussions around how we can make assessments more culturally relevant and reflect the diversity of Ontario communities, and support equitable opportunities and outcomes for students.”
Theengagements will inform recommendations onthe future of assessment and reporting practices in Ontario, including ways to make the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) more culturally relevant and better reflect student well-being and equity.
Discussions with parents, trustees, school board and school leaders, teachers, students and community groups will take place from November 22 to December 12, 2017.
In-person engagement sessions will take place in: Ottawa, Barrie, Sudbury, Windsor, Hamilton, Toronto and Thunder Bay. Advisors will also speak with individuals from the Francophone and Indigenous communities, to understand their diverse experiences and perspectives.
